G120 Chain Slings & Fittings

LB Wire Ropes manufactures Grade 120 chain sling assemblies for industrial lifting applications requiring a high-strength chain sling system.

Grade 120 lifting chain provides increased strength-to-weight performance compared with lower chain grades and can provide an alternative where a higher-strength chain sling system is required.

Chain slings can be manufactured in single and multi-leg configurations using compatible Grade 120 lifting chain, master links, shortening devices, hooks and other components selected to suit the lifting application.

Our technical team can assist with chain size, sling configuration, Working Load Limit and component selection for the required lifting arrangement.

Grade 120 Chain Sling Configurations

Grade 120 chain slings can be manufactured in configurations including:

  • single-leg chain slings
  • two-leg chain slings
  • three-leg chain slings
  • four-leg chain slings
  • adjustable chain slings
  • chain slings incorporating shortening devices
  • assemblies with hooks or other compatible end fittings
  • custom chain sling assemblies

The appropriate configuration depends on factors including the load, lifting points, sling angles, required Working Load Limit and connection arrangement.

Grade 120 Chain & Components

A Grade 120 chain sling is a complete lifting system. Chain and components used within the assembly need to be compatible with the Grade 120 system and appropriately rated for the intended configuration.

Depending on the required assembly, components may include:

  • Grade 120 lifting chain
  • master links and sub-assemblies
  • connecting components
  • shortening devices
  • sling hooks
  • self-locking hooks
  • other compatible Grade 120 fittings

LB Wire Ropes can assist with selecting compatible components for the required sling configuration.

Why Consider Grade 120 Chain?

Grade 120 chain provides higher strength for a comparable chain size than lower chain grades.

Depending on the lifting requirement and available chain sizes, this can provide benefits such as a higher Working Load Limit or the ability to consider a smaller and lighter chain sling system.

Grade 120 is not necessarily the appropriate choice for every lifting application. Chain grade should be considered together with the required Working Load Limit, sling configuration, operating environment, available components and connection requirements.

For a broader comparison of available chain sling grades, see our Chain Slings page. ›

Working Load Limits & Sling Angles

The Working Load Limit of a Grade 120 chain sling depends on the complete sling assembly and how it is used.

The number of sling legs, sling angle, chain size, components and configuration all need to be considered when establishing the permissible load.

As sling angles increase, the force carried by each sling leg also increases. The appropriate Working Load Limit therefore needs to be determined for the complete sling configuration and intended lifting arrangement.

LB Wire Ropes can assist with determining an appropriate Grade 120 chain sling configuration for a known lifting requirement.

Grade 120 Chain Slings & AS 3775

This is one section I would put in the main body of the G120 page, rather than hiding it only in an FAQ, because it’s an important qualification specific to this product.

I’d use:

Grade 120 lifting chain is not currently specified within AS 3775, Chain slings for lifting purposes.

Grade 120 chain sling assemblies therefore need to be manufactured, rated and used in accordance with the applicable manufacturer’s specifications and requirements for the Grade 120 chain sling system.

LB Wire Ropes uses compatible Grade 120 chain and components appropriate to the sling system being manufactured.

That makes the position very clear without making G120 sound somehow non-compliant. It simply sits outside the grades presently specified by AS 3775.

Custom Grade 120 Chain Sling Assemblies

LB Wire Ropes manufactures Grade 120 chain sling assemblies to suit individual lifting requirements.

When specifying a sling, useful information includes:

  • weight of the load
  • number and position of lifting points
  • required sling length
  • proposed number of sling legs
  • lifting angles
  • required end connections
  • need for shortening or adjustment
  • operating environment
  • connection to the load and lifting equipment

Where the lifting arrangement is known, our technical team can assist with determining an appropriate chain size, configuration and compatible components.

Inspection, Testing & Repair

Grade 120 chain slings should be inspected throughout their service life for wear, elongation, deformation, damage, corrosion and deterioration of the chain and components.

LB Wire Ropes provides lifting equipment inspection and testing from our Western Sydney facility and on-site where appropriate.

Repair of a Grade 120 chain sling is subject to the condition of the assembly and the availability of suitable compatible Grade 120 replacement components.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Grade 120 lifting chain?

Grade 120 is a high-strength grade of alloy lifting chain used with compatible Grade 120 components to manufacture chain sling assemblies. Its increased strength-to-weight performance can provide advantages where a higher-strength or potentially lighter chain sling system is required.

Is Grade 120 stronger than Grade 100?

Yes. Grade 120 lifting chain has a higher strength grade than Grade 100 chain. However, the Working Load Limit of a chain sling needs to be determined from the actual chain size, components, configuration and applicable manufacturer’s rating information.

Does Grade 120 chain comply with AS 3775?

AS 3775 currently specifies requirements for Grade 80 and Grade 100 chain slings but does not specify Grade 120 chain slings.

Grade 120 chain sling systems are therefore manufactured, rated and used in accordance with the applicable manufacturer’s specifications and requirements.

Do you manufacture custom Grade 120 chain slings?

Yes. LB Wire Ropes manufactures Grade 120 chain sling assemblies in single and multi-leg configurations using compatible Grade 120 chain, fittings and components.

Can you help select the correct Grade 120 chain sling?

Yes. Provide the load weight, lifting points, required sling length and details of the proposed lifting arrangement. Our technical team can assist with determining an appropriate chain size, configuration and components.
